Instruct the child to read an age-appropriate text aloud. Help the child sound out the words he or she is mispronouncing. Read the text to the child and make sure to ask the child questions such as who, what, when, why, where, and how. Ask the child to guess or predict what is going to happen. Have the child reread the text aloud at least once per day.
Pick out a book on cd at the appropriate age or skill level. Have the child listen to the book on cd, making sure he or she flips the pages at the correct times. Allow the child to listen to the CD over a span of several days. Ask the child to read along with the voice on the CD after a few exercises of simply listening to it. Have the child do this several times over a few days or even a week. Ask the child what happens in each of the pictures. Ask the child questions about the characters in the story.
Create a graphic organizer for the child to fill out with each reading. A graphic organizer is a chart used for organizing information and is visually appealing for students. Use graphic organizers which have basic information about character traits, setting, and main events in the story. Help students fill in the organizer by using guided questions. Use a variety of graphic organizers for each reading to keep the child's interest.
