Spelling Games for Kids Aged 6 to 8

Most educators will agree that kids retain more when they have fun during the learning process. The normal process of studying for a spelling test is tedious and involves memorization, which is not particularly fun for students, especially younger students ages 6 to 8. However, spelling games offer an opportunity to learn words in an exciting and challenging way. Test review times are prime opportunities to incorporate games into lesson plans. Students love competing with each other, having fun with their teacher and feeling confident because they are well prepared for their spelling exam.
  1. Detective Spelling

    • Make sure that each child has a pencil and a sheet of paper. Write each spelling word down on the chalkboard. Do a quick review of the spelling words with your students. After the review, have each student place their heads down on the desk. Rewrite one of the words on the board and include a spelling error. Count to three and have the students lift their heads. Give the students 20 seconds to find the misspelled word and have them write it on their sheet of paper with the correct spelling.

    Sparkle Spelling

    • Form a circle of chairs and have each student stand in front of a chair. The teacher will then call on a student to recite the first letter in a spelling word. Going clockwise, the second student will recite the second letter of the word, the third student recites the third letter and this process continues until the entire word is spelled correctly. Any student who calls out an incorrect letter must sit down and the next student in line will start again reciting the first letter of the word.

    School Scrabble

    • Scrabble is a great tool that many educators use to help students sharpen their spelling skills. Children as young as 4 years old can play the game to improve their spelling ability. With a Scrabble board in the classroom, students can play in teams and have mini-tournaments. Have students play the game regularly and incorporate your weekly spelling words.

    Hot Seat

    • Place three chairs in front of the chalkboard facing the class. The chalkboard will be behind the chairs so students in the hot seats cannot see the board. Three students will occupy the seats. The teacher will write a word on the board and call on students to give clues about the word to the students in the hot seats. The first student in the hot seat to guess the word will stand. He will spell the word out loud. When the student spells the word correctly, he will choose one of his classmates to occupy the hot seat.
