Interactive Games to Teach About Nickels

Internet nickel games vary from animated cartoon interfaces to standard worksheets with photos of coins, as well as word coin problems. Many games can be customized in skill range and scope of the game generated online, allowing for expanded play past nickels into higher denominations of money once players are familiar with the game formats.
  1. Interactive Counting Worksheets

    • Nickel photos are used in addition games online.

Create personalized nickel counting worksheets at APlusMath (see Resource 1). Choose the number of problems to include, ranging from 10 to 50. Choose which coins to use in the problems -- only nickels or a combination of coins. Enter total amounts after the photos of coins are displayed, then score the results online. Solve nickel math word problems at OnlineMathLearning (see Resource 2). This game requires the user to enter total amounts based on words rather than pictures of coins. For example, after viewing "1 penny and 2 nickels," the user enter "$0.11" and scores results online.

    Animated Nickel Purchasing Games

    • Drag and drop coins into a cup while playing an animated game at Toon University.

Drop and drag coins into a cup with audio guidance while playing Toon University's Discovering Coin Values Game (see Resource 3). Players see a total amount of money displayed on screen, then drag coins to drop into the cup to make that amount. The game tells students if they have done the task correctly and gives encouragement throughout play. The Pick a Coin game (see Resource 4) is also animated, with audio, and asks students to choose which coins are needed for a purchase, then reveals answers on each screen.

    Virtual Change Maker Game

    • Collect points in a virtual piggy bank online at FunBrain.

Figure out the proper change that should be given back after a purchase at FunBrain's Change Maker Game (see Resource 5). The easiest level, with totals under $1, uses only coins and shows a purchase price and the amount given to the cashier for the purchase. Players must solve for the change given back. When answers are correct, the dollar amount is saved in a virtual piggy bank, which functions as a score keeper. Players choose from four skill levels and also choose American, British, Canadian, Mexican or Australian currency.

    Online Nickel Flashcards and Quizzes

    • Learn to count nickels with online flashcards.

Play with online nickel flashcards at Mr. Nessbaum's website (see Resource 6). Flashcards are shown with illustrations of different nickel combinations. Answer sides of the cards are revealed when players choose that option to check their work. On Quizlet (see Resource 7), listen to audio vocabulary lists of coin denominations, view pictures of coins along with their names and solve online flashcards which can also have audio. Quizlet also allows you to customize a quiz about coin values, choosing either true-or-false, matching, written or multiple choice questions. The site includes an optional grading component that can be set to grade capitalization and other factors.
