How to Connect Cursive Letters Smoothly

Cursive handwriting should look elegant, with all the letters in each word connected smoothly. Spending time to get letters smoothly connected leads to a better overall look of cursive handwriting, but is not always easy for beginning writers. Because connections are often the last thing taught when teaching cursive handwriting, many students do not practice the skill enough. All of cursive handwriting, including connections, require a great deal of practice in order for the end result to look elegant.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice the beginning and ending tails of each letter. This skill is addressed when each letter is first taught, additional practice on the tails helps when connecting multiple letters.

    • 2

Write each letter without lifting your pen. The only exception to this is when dotting lower case i and j, crossing the letter t and completing the cross of the letter x.

    • 3

Practice combining two letters at a time. Do not pick your pen up between letters and work on starting the tail of the second letter where the ending tail of the first letter stops.

    • 4

Write your letters slowly if you continue to have difficulty with smooth cursive connections. Slowing down will give you time to think about your next stroke before writing.
