Alternatives to Backpacks for Kids

Backpacks are the traditional bags used for carrying school books, supplies and lunches. While the Kids Health website states that there are some advantages to using backpacks, such as evenly distributed weight, there are also drawbacks, such as the heavy weight causing back and neck pain. If your child is seeking a school bag that is different and stands out from the crowd, there are several stylish, useful options available.

    • Messenger bags are a popular alternative to backpacks and are suitable for older children. These multipurpose bags typically have one large compartment and may feature pockets for storing smaller items. Messenger bags are different from backpacks in the sense that they possess a single, long strap that allows individuals to carry the bag over one shoulder or across their bodies.

    Wheeled Backpacks

Be sure to monitor how heavy your child's backpack or messenger, duffel or sling bag is as overly heavy packs can contribute to poor posture; back, neck and shoulder pain; leaning forward or to the side; and lack of balance.
