Third Grade Questions About Zebras

An elementary school teacher compiling a lesson about zebras would do well to anticipate a child's questions about this striking animal -- or better yet, to inspire them. The zebra's unlikely stripes, its habitat, habits, predators and survival tactics are a story likely to capture a child's imagination and perhaps even inspire a field trip to the zoo.
  1. Habitat

    • Questions to ask about a zebra's habitat include: Where are zebras found now and where were they found previously? What environmental conditions do zebras need to survive? Is zebra habitat shrinking? If so, why? What other animals are found in the zebra's habitat? What predators? Does the zebra stay in the same place for most of its life, or does it move around? If it moves, why? Is zebra habitat varied, or does the zebra thrive only in one kind of environment?

    Characteristics

    • Questions that address the zebra's characteristics might be: Is the zebra a horse? Is the zebra white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Are each zebra's stripes unique? How long do zebras usually live? Are zebras smart? How do they communicate with one another? What does a zebra do when attacked? How does the zebra defend itself -- what is its main weapon? How fast can a zebra run? How does a baby zebra survive until it can defend itself? What do zebras usually die of?

    Diet

    • Ask: What do zebras eat? How much do they need to eat to survive? Do they always eat the same things, or does their diet vary? How do they seek their food? Can the zebra go a long time without water, or does it need to drink often? How often do zebras eat? How long before a baby zebra is weaned?

    Conservation

    • Conservation is becoming an increasingly important part of any discussion about animals in the wild. Questions that address this aspect of the lesson might include: How many zebras are estimated to live in the wild today? Is that more or less than previously? What's being done to ensure the preservation of wild zebra habitat? What's being done to protect wild zebras from poachers and disease? Is what's being done now enough to ensure their continued survival?
