Read "Froggy's Sleepover" with your child. Discuss how excited Max felt in the story to have Froggy spend the night. Allow your child to plan a sleepover with one of her friends. Planning to have someone over to your house before she spends the night at a friend's house may help with future sleepover anxiety. Encourage her to plan food and snack ideas as well as activities to do with her friend. An example might include baking frog cookies and reading the book, "Froggy's Sleepover" at the event.
Prepare a sleepover packing list after reading the book. You can alleviate a child's anxiety by helping him feel prepared for a sleepover event. Discuss items that Froggy and Max might want to pack and use the book for examples. He might include items like pajamas, a toothbrush and sleeping bag. Help him make the checklist and then allow the child to use it when packing for his first sleepover.
Make your own Froggy pillowcase for use at your child's sleepover. Purchase a plain white pillowcase for the project. Use iron-on transfer computer paper and your favorite printing program to print out frog graphics to decorate the pillowcase. Enhance the case with fabric paints and stamps. Wash the pillowcase before the child takes it with him to his first sleepover.
Read "Froggy's Sleepover" with your child and ask him to write a letter to Froggy and Max telling them how to deal with their fear of spending the night. Ask your child to tell them specific ways they can deal with their fears, such as call a parent or take a special stuffed animal to the sleepover. Brainstorming ways to help Froggy and Max through their fears will help a child with his own fears when it comes time for him to stay at a friend's house.
