Consider assigning an online state spelling game to students to help them learn how to spell the 50 states correctly. Kids will enjoy getting an assignment that involves a game. The game on the Sporcle site requires the player to correctly type the name of all 50 states in 10 minutes. Another online game to consider is one found at Braingle. The game asks the player questions about various states and the player must correctly type the name of the correct state in the space.
Use classroom games to help students learn how to spell the states. Have students line up in a row. The teacher shouts out a name of state. The first player must give the first letter and each player after that must call out the next letter in the word. Anyone who gets a letter wrong is out of the game.
Another classroom game is to provide each student with a worksheet with each of the state names written on it. Leave out a few letters and ask each student to fill in the missing letters. The first student who correctly finishes the worksheet wins the game.
Have students write the names of the 50 states on index cards. Each child should make his own set of flash cards so he can practice spelling with his parents at home. Then have the students quiz each other in class on the spelling of the states. One person names the state and the other person has to spell the word. If he gets the spelling correct, he gets to keep the card, but if he gets it wrong it goes into a "miss" pile and he must try again.
Produce a word find or crossword puzzle that features the names of the states. Have children solve the puzzles and learn how to spell the states in the process.
Another way to help students learn how to spell some of the longer state names is to write the state name on the board and have students see how many other words they can make from the letters in the state's name.
