Let your child shape a pipe cleaner however they want - a circle, squiggle or triangle for example. While this is happening, carefully pour boiling water into a jar. Help your child add borax until you see it settling on the bottom (remember the jar will be hot). Once this is done, using string tied to the pipe cleaner, lower the pipe cleaner into the water until it is fully submerged. Keep it hanging there using a pencil or another object that can rest along the top of the jar. After 24 hours, have your child pull the pipe cleaner back out. It should be covered with small crystals.
Give your child a piece of construction paper and any art supplies they choose. This can be colored pencils, crayons, markers, glue, and cotton balls or anything else. The child can then create any masterpiece they want on the paper. When finished with the artwork, have your child write a poem that describes what they drew. Make sure they focus on colors, feelings, and perhaps an event that is happening. You may want to give them examples such as a Shel Silverstein poem. This process allows your child to learn a little about poetry while picking up some good writing tips.
Now you can teach your kids chemistry and end up with a classic candy at the end. Begin by placing a cup of boiling water in a bowl. Have your child place sugar into the water until it is thick enough that it can no longer be stirred. Pour the mixture into a tall jar, leaving the excess sugar in the bowl. Using a string, tie one end to a Popsicle stick and the other to a pen or pencil. Allow the stick to hang into the sugar/water mix and allow the pen to sit across the jar rim holding the stick in place. Let your child add food coloring until they are happy with the color. Water over the next twenty four hours as crystals form on the stick and then enjoy the results.
Fill a small cup with water and stir in a heaping teaspoon of Borax powder. Take another cup and fill it with one-inch of white glue. Add three tablespoons of water to the glue and any food coloring your child wants. After stirring together, add in one tablespoon of the water/borax from your first cup. Let your child mix everything together and in no time there will be slime stuck all over your spoon. It is ready to be played with immediately and will need to be kept in an airtight container for future use.
