Biology Terminology for Kids

Biology is the study of living things. All students have to learn biology in grade school. However, learning about plants and animals can be interesting if you participate in projects. There are some basic biology terms every kid should know before getting too far into the subject. These terms frequently come up, therefore, understanding what they mean can only benefit you.
  1. Cell

    • A cell is the basic unit of a living thing. Animals and plants are made up of many cells that perform specific functions. Animal and plant cells differ slightly in structure. Animal and plant cells differ in shape, chloroplast, centrioles, plastids, cell wall and lysosomes.

    Nucleus

    • A nucleus is an atom's center. It's regarded as the "brain" of the nucleus. It's composed of DNA and other material. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is what determines genetics.

    Chloroplast

    • A chloroplast is a sac that holds a green substance known as chloroplasm. Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells. They are used to help make food for the plant. Chloroplasts "catch" sunlight for the cell to use in a chemical reaction. This reaction produces food for the plant.

    Photosynthesis

    • Photosynthesis is the process in which plants make food. By using chloroplasts, plants can use sunlight to create chemical energy. The plant turns carbon dioxide into a compound using the sun's light.

    Biome

    • A biome refers to the community, or area, where specific plants and animals live. There are six major biomes: freshwater, marine, desert, forest, grassland and tundra. Each biome has its own type of climate and variety of living things.

    Gene

    • Genes carry hereditary traits. According to PHschool.com, a gene is "A discrete unit of hereditary information consisting of a specific nucleotide sequence in DNA (or RNA, in some viruses)." Genes are what helps determine each living thing's physical, mental and emotional traits.

    RNA

    • RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. This substance is a nucleic acid that carries genetic information. Unlike DNA, RNA has a different structure that can be cut and rebuilt by ribozymes.
