Ask two volunteer students to leave the classroom. In the hallway, they must secretly choose one adverb that will describe the manner in which a verb is done, such as quickly, quietly or smoothly. The class must choose verbs they can request the students to perform in that manner to help them guess the adverb. Call the students back into the classroom and have class request the volunteers to perform the adverbs using the requested verb. Classmates can raise their hands when they think they know the adverb; the student whose adverb is correctly guessed first is the winner and will compete against a new volunteer. The game continues as the winner of the previous round and the new competitor go into the hallway to choose a new adverb to compete with.
On small squares of paper or a stack of index cards, write one adverb per card, such as strangely, normally, quickly and secretly. One student begins the game by walking to the front of the classroom, taking a card and drawing a verb in the manner of that adverb. The student is not allowed to speak, act or make sounds. The first student to correctly guess the adverb gets to be the next adverb artist.
Your school office may have a playground equipment catalog which you can borrow to show the class. Read a few paragraphs describing the various pieces of equipment available for purchase. Identify and list the adjectives used. Divide the class into partnerships and give each team a blank sheet of white paper folded in half, like a page from a catalog. Instruct students to draw pictures of the best playground equipment they can imagine. Each illustration must include a small descriptive paragraph using creative, descriptive adjectives to convince customers to order that item. Have students exchange and read each other's catalogs. Highlight a few exceptionally well-written paragraphs to the class.
Set up two empty boxes in front of the classroom, one labeled "nouns" and the other "adjectives." Place 30 squares of white paper or index cards in each box with one noun written on each card in the noun box and one adjective on each card in the adjective box. Use creative and unusual adjectives such as tremendous, fanged or stinky. Students must take one noun card and one adjective card from the boxes and draw their interpretation of the item described. When each student has completed his drawing, gather in a circle and have each student tell the class his noun and adjective.
