5th Grade Projects With Glue & Yarn

Yarn is one arts and crafts material which features an older elementary student's ability to manipulate his fine motor skills. Older elementary students use the inexpensive material for many fifth grade projects with glue and yarn. Some projects include a clothesline mixed media artwork, a recycled card, bottle doll and yarn eggs.
  1. Clotheslines

    • A sky painting on paper is the base of a clothesline art project. Use tempera paint for the blue sky and clouds. Glue a strand of yarn across the entire painting to represent a clothesline. Students should cut out fabric scraps or old paper to form clothes and household items hanging from the clothesline. Cut-up fabric can be glued flat or raised off the surface so they look like they are being moved by a breeze.

    Recycled Card

    • Compile scraps of old cardboard, yarn, plastics and fabric for a recycled card project. Students should cut up the old materials and piece them onto cardboard from used cereal boxes to make a thank you card. Glue the items, including the yarn, onto the printed side of the cereal box, so the writing goes on the plain side. Use markers to write inside the card.

    Bottle Doll

    • Fill a used plastic water bottle with sand to form the body of a bottle doll. The sand gives the bottle stability. Form a head by crumpling newspaper and securing it to the top of the water bottle with masking tape. Dip strips of newspaper into papier-mache paste and lay them over the doll's head and body. After two layers of papier-mache, paint the dolls with tempera paint. Cut up yarn and glue on top of the head as hair. Yarn can also be used for necklaces or decorative elements on the clothing.

    Yarn Eggs

    • Fifth graders first blow up balloons for a yarn egg craft. Mix together one part white glue with one part water in a small bowl. Dip a 3-foot-long strand of yarn of any color into the mixture, and wrap the yarn around the balloon. Use about 15 more strands of yarn to dip into the glue and wrap around the balloon. Random patterns should be used and tuck loose yarn ends under other pieces of yarn. Attach the balloon to a string with a clothespin to let it dry overnight. After the yarn dries, pop the balloon with a pin and hang the yarn egg with a piece of yarn.
