Activities Introducing Adjectives

An adjective is a word used to describe the size, amount or quality of a noun. The spelling of an adjective changes depending on how it is used in a sentence, such as with a count or non-count noun or in a comparative statement. Vocabulary and word order are also connected to proper adjective use. Whether you're planning an ESL class, teaching primary school or giving adults a refresher on grammar, there are many options for activities introducing adjectives.
  1. Games and Pictures

    • Adjective use in English can be confusing in written and spoken form. Games and puzzles are great for beginners of any age and can help make the learning process less intimidating. Students can be split into groups or individually asked to list as many adjectives as possible from a specific grammatical category, beginning with a certain letter or inspired by an image. Students can also sort out flash cards or jumbled sentences to put adjectives in the proper order and form. These games can also be timed to add some excitement.

    Conversation

    • Activities that introduce adjectives by incorporating daily conversation are ideal for native English speakers and ESL learners who can study some English grammatical concepts. Students can be asked to describe pictures, personal experiences, appearances or a favorite thing that involves sensory perception, like food or a painting. Specific independent work includes interviewing in pairs or the "Find Someone Who..." exercise. Instructors have the options of correcting the student orally or pointing out their correct adjective use as an example.

    Writing

    • Writing activities that introduce adjectives can be tailored to students of almost any level. Simple writing activities that involve using a lot of describing words include writing descriptive lists of words, sentences or paragraphs to learn the basic grammatical use of adjectives. Other factors that are absent from oral lessons on adjectives, like punctuation and spelling, are ubiquitous in writing exercises that are intended to introduce students to adjectives.

    Role-Playing

    • Role-playing to introduce adjectives is a way to integrate the methods used during writing and conversation activities. Students not only practice their spoken adjective use but also can use their writing skills. Skits the students perform can be lifted from popular movies or TV programs that the students know if the instructor feels they need some extra incentive or a more-familiar frame of reference. More-advanced students can compose their own skits and act them out as part of group projects or pair work.
