Why is elementary school called grammar school?
The term "grammar school" is a historical holdover. In earlier times, particularly in England, grammar schools focused heavily on the study of Latin grammar. This was considered the foundation for a classical education and a necessary stepping stone to university. As educational systems evolved, the focus shifted, but the name "grammar school" stuck in some places, even though the curriculum is no longer primarily focused on Latin grammar. In other regions, the term "elementary school" became more common. Therefore, there's no longer a direct connection between the name "grammar school" and the curriculum's emphasis on grammar.
