Encourage collaborative learning by putting students in groups to learn about ocean animals. Ask each group to learn as much as they can about one ocean animal, such as jellyfish, humpback whales or dolphins, and present their findings to the class. Encourage students to present the information by creating colorful posters with pictures to show the class.
Teach students about dolphins by studying their diet. Show students how to use encyclopedias to look up information about what dolphins eat. Give each student a piece of construction paper and markers and ask eacgh to draw the different types of foods that dolphins eat. Extend learning by researching the diet of other animals in the ocean, including the octopus, whales, turtles and different types of fish. Group animals by those that eat plants and those that eat animals.
Teach students about ocean animals through artwork. Use pictures from books and encyclopedias to show students what different ocean animals look like. Give students paper, pencils, crayons and markers and encourage them to draw an animal from the ocean. Encourage students to label as many parts of the ocean animal as they can. Alternatively, provide students with clay and let them create a 3-D model of an ocean animal.
Teach students about endangered ocean animals and research ways that they can help to protect those animals. Choose animals from the endangered species list and help students learn about the animals' habitat, diet and life cycle. Join an organization that works toward protecting endangered ocean animals. Encourage students to create posters that teach other students in the school about a specific endangered animal and how they can help to protect that animal. Hang the posters around the school.
