The Advantages of a Portable Transformer

Utilities and individuals use portable or mobile transformers to temporarily replace transformers that are out of service for maintenance or because of a forced outage. They are available in power ranges of 10 to 100 MVA, which is a medium power range. Larger power transformers or those that provide higher voltages are typically not mobile because of their excessive weight and impractical physical dimensions.

They are frequently deployed in places where the supply of electricity does not meet its demand. A stand-alone portable transformer reduces commission labor expense and engineering installation. It also reduces integrated and wiring testing costs, field assembly, quality issues and on-site labor costs. Portable transformers are designed to be tamper-proof and safe, which minimizes security concerns. They require less space than conventional, large-scale substations, especially with some units being only 6 ft. wide and 16 ft. long. This reduces land rental costs and allows freed space to be better utilized.
