In APA format, you italicize the following:

Titles:

* Books: *The Lord of the Rings*

* Journals: *Journal of Experimental Psychology: General*

* Reports: *The State of the Union Address*

* Films: *Citizen Kane*

* Plays: *Hamlet*

* Musical Compositions: *Symphony No. 5*

* Artwork: *Starry Night*

Words:

* Foreign words: *a priori*

* Emphasis: *The results were significant.* (Use sparingly)

Other:

* Volume numbers of journals: *Journal of Applied Psychology, 98*, 45-52.

* Statistical symbols: *p* < .05

Things you do NOT italicize:

* Articles, prepositions, and conjunctions in titles (unless they are the first word).

* Subtitles of books, articles, or reports.

* Titles of chapters in books.

* Titles of articles in journals.

* Titles of websites.

* Titles of papers or reports you have written.
