Step-by-Step Art Teaching for Children

Teaching children art skills in a step-by-step process differs from the observational process of art teaching. When observing an object, children make a mental picture of the object in their mind, and then proceed to draw or paint the object in their own way. Step-by-step art is teaching children how to draw or paint an object by taking steps within a formula for drawing or painting. The step-by-step formula works best in teaching children how to draw.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a dot in the center of each child's paper with a red felt-tip marker. Sit with children while doing this project, and instruct them by doing the same steps along with them, using your own paper and marker. The dot helps children to understand the center of the page. Make sure students who are shy or have developmental disabilities are seated near you, so they can get a closer look and more instruction.

    • 2

Give the children one felt-tip marker each, in one color. This will allow the children to develop their skills on drawing form, without focusing on scribbling out the design or erasing.

    • 3

Have children practice first on old newspaper, so they can get an idea of the steps needed before they attempt to do their actual drawing on drawing paper. This will keep the children from becoming nervous about drawing on clean paper as opposed to old paper, where they can practice and develop their drawing skills. Let children fill in their drawings on scrap paper or old newspaper with crayons. This way they can practice coloring within the lines as well.

    • 4

Teach children how to make shapes, by starting with a circle. Demonstrate how to make a circle by having them move their arms around in the air, in a round shape. Have the children draw a tornado shape on their paper, by going around and around in circular shapes with the felt-tip pen. Show them first how it is done, by going from bigger to smaller shapes, and then have them draw the tornado on their paper.

    • 5

Make page divisions. Page division teaches children sections, and how to draw within each section on a page. Have the children turn their papers over to the clean side. Make another red dot in the center on the clean side. Place your felt-tip pen at the top of your page over the red dot, and draw a line through the red dot, all the way down to the bottom. Walk around to each child and instruct them on how to do this.

    • 6

Tell the children to try to make a straight line, and inform them that it doesn't have to be perfectly straight, and to try their best. Draw a line next in the middle from one side of the paper to the other, so there are four squares on the paper. The children will have four boxes to draw in, and you can instruct them on step-by-step drawings within each box.
