Opening & Closing Activities for Preschool

The purpose of preschool is to help children develop physically, socially and intellectually. Preschoolers have short attention spans and need frequent transitions in activities to avoid boredom. The primary goal of preschool educators is to prepare children for primary education. Having a daily plan and curriculum with engaging transitional activities will result in an educationally productive environment. Routines are healthy for children so developing activities that preschoolers look forward to will help keep them attentive and engaged.
  1. Circle Time

    • Circle time helps children transition from home to the school environment.

Circle time is a transition from the children's' morning routines with family and caregivers to the school environment. Common circle activities include discussing the weather, giving the children the itinerary of the day and assigning tasks.

    Morning Songs

    • Preschoolers enjoy singing and integrating music early in the day will help get their creative juices flowing. Tunes, such as the "ABC Song", can double as an educational tool. Songs that incorporate movement and dancing are good for motor development.

    Storytime

    • Transitions in the day help prevent preschoolers from getting bored.

Storytime is to a preschooler what a lecture is to a college student. Books should entertain as well as educate the children. Picture books provide the intellectual and visual stimulation children crave.

    Snack Time

    • Snack time marks the transition from the morning to the afternoon. Children enjoy cooking and can assist with snack preparation. This is also the perfect time to educate children on nutrition and food groups.

    Art Activities

    • Art allows children to creatively express themselves

Painting, coloring and drawing are afternoon activities that preschoolers look forward to. Developing art projects that teach children about seasons, animals and holidays are ideal.

    Clean-Up Time

    • Children need to learn the importance of cleaning up after themselves. Clean-up time in the afternoon helps preschoolers begin to make the transition from school to home. Clean-up time is most effective when made into a game.
