One of the easiest ways to introduce the order of numbers is by counting things around the house. Count your preschoolers favorite toys with her. Encourage her to repeat the numbers as you say them. Count out two or three of your preschooler's favorite snack as you hand them out. Encourage your child to ask for "two cookies" and count them out when she does so successfully. Count fingers and toes, or count ears or eyes. This not only teaches counting, but it helps teach your preschooler the parts of the body as well.
Play games with dice. Always let your child roll the dice, which can be fun for him. Take time after each roll to count the numbers on the dice. This is a good visual representation of the numbers you're saying. Have your child move the playing pieces the appropriate number of times, which helps him correlate what he's counted with the physical application of counting.
Read books about numbers. Titles like "The Three Little Pigs," or "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" can entertain as well as teach. Have your child count pages with you as you turn them. Spend time counting the characters in the story.
Teach your child to recite simple rhymes that reinforce numbers. "Five Little Ducks," "Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Three Men in a Tub," "Three Blind Mice" and "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" are examples. Create simple melodies and sing the rhymes with your child. Use props, such as toy mice, a shoe or rubber ducks, to act out the rhymes for your child while you read them.
Have your child memorize her phone number and street address. Show her flashcards and tell her the names of the numbers. Flashcards that have a visual representation of the number can be fun for preschool kids, particularly when the images that accompany the numbers are items a preschooler recognizes, such as animals, fruit and toys.
