Grading With Percentages

Grading with percentages is a popular method to score tests or class assignments. Grades associated with those percentages vary from teacher to teacher. Typically teachers mark papers with 100 percent to 90 percent as an A, 89 percent to 80 percent as a B, 79 percent to 70 as a C, 69 percent to 60 percent as a D, and lower percentages as failing. If all questions on the test have the equal scoring weight, you can easily grade with percentages. If all questions are answered correctly, the test score is 100 percent. If any questions were answered incorrectly, use the following steps to find the percentage score.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of questions on the test. How many total questions are there?

    • 2

Count the number of questions that were answered correctly on the test. How many are there?

    • 3

Turn on or clear your pocket calculator. This can be done by pushing the key that may be labeled “AC,” “On,” “C,” or “On C.”

    • 4

Enter the number of questions that were answered correctly into your calculator. For example, if 5 answered were correct, enter the number “5.”

    • 5

Push the divide key, that is labeled “/” or “÷.”

    • 6

Enter the number of total questions on the test into your calculator. For example, if there are 10 total questions, enter the number “10.”

    • 7

Push the equal key, which is labeled “=.” Your answer will be a decimal number, which may have a “0” to the left of the decimal.

    • 8

Remove the decimal and the “0” to its left. For example, if your answer is “0.5” you will remove the 0 and decimal to have “5.”

    • 9

Add a “0” after the number if there is just one digit. If there are two digits, do not add a 0. For example, if your answer was 0.5, you will change it to 50. If your answer was 0.53 your answer will be 53.

    • 10

Add a % mark after your number, and that tells you what percentage grade you have. For example, 0.5 becomes 50 percent or 0.53 becomes 53 percent.
