Invite your child to join you when you are baking. A small child can work on his counting by helping you count the number of eggs or scoops of flour needed in your recipe. A slightly older child can work on fractions. Have her use different-sized measuring cups to create 1 cup of sugar. Assist an even older child with his critical thinking skills by having him help you double a recipe or cut one in half.

    • 2

Have your child help you pay for items at the store to help her understand the concept of money. Offer your child coins for items that are less than a dollar or a variety of different bills to help pay for something more expensive. Do this during the day when the store is less busy so that your child will not feel rushed.

    • 3

Teach your child about a budget by helping him keep track of his savings for desired items. Teach him about tax and how to calculate, since the sticker price will not be the total price of the item.

    • 4

Play games such as Monopoly with your child to work on counting and managing money. Play simple games such as Candy Land with your young children to work on their counting skills.

    • 5

Trade out the digital clocks in your house for the old-fashioned kind to reinforce telling time. Tell your child what time her favorite television show is on and let her figure out when the clock reads that time.

Have your child help with household chores and count things as you do. For instance, count the number of socks that you pair or the number of T-shirts or towels that you fold.
