Louisiana Home Schooling Laws

Many parents across the country have opted to home school their children, and Louisiana is no exception to the rule. Some states have very strict laws in regards to home schools, while others are more lax. It is important to fully understand each state's laws before taking on an endeavor such as home schooling.
  1. Mandatory Age Requirements

    • In the state of Louisiana, every child between the ages of 7 and 17 must attend school by law. The exception to this law is if the student has graduated before the age of 17.

    Legal Requirements

    • School must be conducted in the home and by the parents or legal guardians. School must operate 180 days per year.

    Formal Enrollment

    • Students that attended public school during the year and were removed or attended public school the year before must officially withdraw and claim enrollment in writing within ten days of new enrollment.

    Cirriculum

    • The same or a very similar curriculum must be followed by homeschooling that is used in the public schools. There are no legal teaching qualifications for parents to meet.

    Funding

    • Home schools in the state of Louisiana can not directly or indirectly receive any funding from either federal or state sources.

    Testing/Graduation

    • Home schools in the state of Louisiana are not required to meet or submit any standardized tests. The high school diplomas or certificates that are issued to Louisiana home school students by the parents will carry the same weight as a public school diploma.
