Home Schooling Advantages & Disadvantages

More parents are making the decision to educate their children at home. While homeschooling is the perfect choice for most families, others try it only temporarily. There are both advantages and disadvantages to homeschooling.
  1. The Advantage of Curriculum Choices

    • One advantage of homeschooling is that parents have the freedom to utilize an ever growing selection of curriculum. This includes subjects that aren't readily taught in their district.

The Advantage of Shorter School Days

    • Children who are homeschooled can get much more accomplished, in a shorter period of time. Many times it only takes a few hours to get through what would be a week's lessons, in the traditional classroom. Homework can be eliminated, as well.

The Advantage of Stronger Family Relationships

    • Educating at home is an excellent way to improve family relationships. This is predominately because of the amount of quality time spent together, on an ongoing basis.

    The Disadvantage of Prep Time

    • One disadvantage of homeschooling is that it can be very time-consuming to decide on and then prepare lesson plans. There is so much available that it is sometimes difficult to coordinate all necessary subjects in a short period of time.

    The Disadvantage of Being Different

    • Unfortunately, not everyone is an advocate of homeschooling. Many times, there will be friends and family members who will question and disapprove of this method of education.

    The Disadvantage of 24/7

    • Being together all the time, could be considered a disadvantage in some families. However, one solution to this might be scheduling outside activities, on a regular basis.
