How to Download Document Based Questions in World History

Document-based questions, or DBQs, are essential assessment tools in the discipline of world history, forcing students to read primary sources critically. DBQs use a range of such sources and ask students to draw and defend conclusions based on those documents. A good history textbook will have strong online DBQs, but other resources are available if you are working exclusively online.

  1. How to Download Document Based Questions

    • 1

Purchase a world history textbook from a reputable publisher. An older edition is usually adequate, and used copies are cheaper. As an example, we will use the second edition of McGraw-Hill's "Traditions and Encounters," but you can access the DBQs without a textbook.

    • 2

Pick out the documents for your exercise. In "Traditions and Encounters," special text boxes identify the primary sources.

    • 3

Find the publisher's Web site for your textbook. New textbook editions usually include a log-in and password to access extra online materials.

    • 4

Click on the "student center" link. (The "instructor center" will require an educator's password.)

    • 5

Click through to the chapter for your subject. In "Traditions and Encounters," for example, Chapter 10 covers ancient Greece.

    • 6

Click on the "Internet activities" link to access the document-based questions for that chapter.
