Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of what you have to offer a foreign-exchange student in terms of accommodations. Things to consider include the size of the bedroom, furniture, bathroom access (shared or private), transportation and location. These points will effect the rate your foreign-exchange student pays for living accommodations.Having this information handy will help when you are are filling out homestay applications.

    • 2

Locate nearby schools that offer foreign-exchange programs, and make a list of their addresses and contact information. If you are interested in hosting a student from a particular country, find out if the schools near you have hosted students from that country in the past. Visit any school you are considering and keep transportation in mind. A student who is unfamiliar with English or French will most likely by intimidated by needing two bus transfers to get to and from school, so choose a school that is a comfortable distance from your home. Also be sure to find out what percentage the agency or school keeps of the student rate and what you will receive.

    • 3

Find a local agency, such as Vancouver Homestay Agency, if you cannot apply directly through a school to be a foreign-exchange host. Fill out the application either on-line or in person. Consider whether or not you have a gender preference, and include whether or not you are bilingual and in what language. Because most foreign-exchange students come to Vancouver to learn either English or French, speaking their language is not necessary, although it may help them feel more comfortable.

Prepare your family and your home for a visit from a school or agency worker. Most applicants will be interviewed, and homes inspected, before allowing them to become hosts for foreign-exchange students.
