Determine the structure of the course . In college courses, students expect to spend two hours of time outside the class for studying for every hour of class time. However, since class time and studying time are virtually the same, figure that each student should spend at least twice as much weekly hours as the number of credit hours per class. For example, a college course that earns three credit hours should require six hours of study time.
Write your syllabus or class schedule. This document will be the "bible" of the class. It should include assignments, due dates, and grading policies. Be sure that all supplemental materials are listed clearly. Be sure to note whether assignments are required or optional.
Write application assignments. The "now you try" assignments can also be communicated via social networks. Assignments should contain enough detail to leave no room for misinterpretation, but give enough leeway for students to apply their knowledge. For example, a watercolor class might ask a student to use a specific brush stroke to showcase movement. Leave it up to the students to determine what type of movement to display, be it wind, waves, or a crawling baby.
Communicate with students. Be sure to make yourself accessible through office hours for phone calls or live chat room time. If this is not feasible, be sure to tell students that you will respond to queries within a certain number of hours, preferably less than 24.
Record on-camera instructions if necessary. For courses that require visual content, such as calculus or sculpture, you'll need a method to record yourself and you'll need to upload it as a file type that students can easily download.
