If you choose to homeschool your children in the state of Illinois, the state mandates that certain subjects must be covered by the parent or tutor, just as they would be covered in public education. The subjects which are required include: Language Arts, Mathematics, Biological and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Physical Development and Health. Certain subjects are required for a well-rounded education, just as if students were being taught in a public school.
Illinois law mandates that students who are homeschooled in Illinois must be between the ages of 7-17 years. Children must be instructed in the English language. If the child does not speak English, it is required for the teacher to teach in both English and their native language while the child learns English.
Similar to public and private schools, parents who homeschool in the state of Illinois are required to keep certain birth and medical records on file. These required records include: birth certificate, social security card, dental, vision and hearing exams, vaccination records, transcripts and certificates for any classes taken outside of the home, school transcripts and grade reports.
Parents that homeschool must be able to prove competency and show that all subject areas are able to be taught by them. They must be able to meet public schooling standards in all subject areas. There are no set hours or number of days that a parent has to spend on instruction, however, all curriculum must be covered the same way it would be in a public school. Parents must be able to prove this if they are ever asked to, so they must keep good records of their competency.
