How to Use Cause & Effect in Paragraph Development

Paragraph development is a key aspect of writing effective essays and research papers. Several methods exist to develop paragraphs, including comparison and contrast, analysis, cause and effect and definition. Cause and effect paragraph development examines the reasons an event occurred and the results of that event. It requires a writer to explain the situation before a change occurred to fully develop the paragraph. Three common ways exist for you to write cause and effect paragraphs.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a cause and effect paragraph by first describing a cause, then explaining the effect. For example, if you are writing about teen violence, you would first discuss teen violence and state some relevant statistics that provide a context, such as number of crimes committed by teenagers over the past five years, then discuss the effects of teen violence on schools, families and local communities.

    • 2

Write a cause and effect paragraph by first stating an effect, then examining the causes. So in the essay about teen violence, you might write, "Teen violence has a harmful effect on local schools because of increased gang activity, fear by other students of being hurt and resources it takes to provide increased security to control conflict." Then in the next sentence, you explain the causes by writing, "Lack of discipline, economic conditions and hopelessness all contribute towards teens becoming violent."

    • 3

Write a cause and effect paragraph by examining cause and effect at the same time. In other words, write about a cause, then immediately provide an effect. So in an essay about teen violence, you could write a sentence about teen violence statistics in low-income neighborhoods, then in the next sentence, examine the negative economic and moral effects that violence creates in the community.
