What Is a Good Wrap Up to a Paragraph?

When writing an essay with multiple paragraphs of information, it is important to tie the different paragraphs together. Although topic sentences are an important part of transitioning from one thought to the next, the final sentence in your paragraph is also extremely important. Make sure that you craft an appropriate concluding sentence to keep your reader on track.
  1. Summarize the Main Ideas

    • Sometimes, particularly in long paragraphs often associated with college or academic essay writing, you may cover a lot of information in one paragraph. When this is the case, it is important that you use the last sentence or two of the paragraph to summarize your main points for the reader so that she can consider those ideas as she moves on further in your paper. Remember, this summary should only be one to two sentences long, so just briefly articulate the most important ideas you want your reader to take on to the next paragraph.

    Make your Point

    • Some paragraphs, especially those included in persuasive essays, include a lot of quotes and evidence that are meant to convince the reader of the point you are trying to make. Although your topic sentence should have been used to give a reader a good understanding of your main point, you may need to reiterate that main point again at the end of the paragraph. Instead of simply copying your topic sentence, however, try to reword your main argument of the paragraph in a different way to keep the reader's attention.

    Incorporate Questions When Appropriate

    • In some paragraphs, ending with a question is not a good idea at all and should be avoided. For example, if you are writing only one paragraph for an assignment, it is almost always inappropriate to end with a question, as this may confuse your reader and leave him searching for answers that you did not give. However, when writing a five-paragraph essay, concluding an early paragraph with a question may make sense. Only end a paragraph with a question if the new information in your next paragraph will adequately answer the question for your audience.

    Provide a Transition

    • The last sentence of the paragraph should be used to transition into the next paragraph, unless the last sentence is part of a concluding paragraph. Remember that the topic sentence of the next paragraph will be your chance to truly transition from your previous paragraph. However, you should include a main point or question that corresponds to the idea of your next paragraph in order to make the transition go more smoothly between the paragraphs.
