How to Do an Outline for a Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay aims to communicate an experience to the reader, whether it's a moment in a person's life, a favorite food or a personal anecdote, for example. When building an outline, the writer needs to put herself as much as possible into the same mental state she was in when she experienced the topic she is describing. The more clear she makes her outline, the more successful she will be at writing her essay.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the topic in the middle of a page and then branch out to include ideas you come up with to create subcategories. Branch out from the subcategories with ideas that relate to those categories.

    • 2

Add to each section by describing your emotions about the topic. Use vivid language that will plant a sharp image or a level of understanding into the reader's mind. Describe what you were thinking at the time you encountered your topic.

    • 3

Leave as much as possible with your reader all the components of your encounter with your topic that would have them feeling the same way you did during your experience. Accomplish this by adding every component necessary, whether it was the lighting, smell, taste, sound, emotional state, etc.

    • 4

Circle all the information that you want included in your essay and place them into categories. Organize each category in the order you want to present them. For example, you may want to break them into the period of time they take place.

    • 5

Go through your outline while imagining yourself in the reader's shoes. Ask yourself about whether what you are trying to communicate translates into the minds of the person who is reading.
