Visit the New York Language Center, which has four branches in New York City. According to the Center's website, NYLC was named "The Best English School in New York" by the readers of El Diario. Tuition for the Intensive Language Program start at $755 plus fees for five weeks, but there are also flexible part-time sessions that cost around $200 for 40-50 hours of instruction. NYLC branches are located in Upper West Side and Midtown Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
Visit the American Language Communication Center, which has branches in Manhattan and Queens. Sessions start at $13 per hour. Students are required to fill out an I-20 form.
Become a member at the International Center in New York and apply for a free orientation. The International Center offers classes, workshops and partnerships to improve speaking and writing in English. The Center also provides an extensive social network for its members, including trips around the city, a library and lounge and an immigrant support group and community outreach.
Go to New York Public Library's branches in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. The Riverside Language Program has teamed up with the library to provide free classes three times a year. The classes are open for people older than 16, but space is limited.
Look at free online programs to augment your language learning. Livemocha, for example is a free language-learning social network that provides courses and connects native speakers to learners.
Get out and practice! In a city of more than 8 million people, language partners are everywhere. Once you feel comfortable with a simple conversation, practice in real life situations, such as buying groceries, visiting clubs and coffee shops or traveling around town.
