For years, American children watched Schoolhouse Rock as part of the Saturday morning cartoon lineup. Schoolhouse Rock is a series of songs performed by cartoons that explained such things as the American political system, science, multiplication and grammar. The songs are catchy and the lyrics easy to learn. For instance, the song "Conjunction Junction", deals with how to properly use conjunctions in a sentence. The lyrics describe the rule, define and give examples of conjunctions, then show how conjunctions are used. There are songs for prepositions, interjections, adverbs, adjectives and more.
Use flash cards to identify particular parts of speech, then use that part of speech in a sentence. This is also a good way to learn verb conjugations and tenses. For instance, the verb "work" could be on the front of a card. The person being quizzed would then identify it as a verb, and use it in a sentence. Additionally, they could conjugate the verb. An added bonus of this type of exercise is that the person being quizzed would be speaking the answers, a key element to learning the language.
Have questions dealing with a particular part of grammar, such as "used to do or be." For instance, give two sentence options and have the student choose the correct one. The first sentence could be, "You will be used to the noisy traffic soon" versus "You will used to be to the noisy traffic soon." This type of exercise can be spoken, written on a board, or on a sheet of paper. With this exercise, as with many others while learning a language, repetition is the key.
To make the learning process relaxing and a bit more fun, consider having a Conversational Cafe periodically. Native English speakers, or those with excellent speaking skills, would be invited in to have conversations with the students on a one-to-one basis. Soft drinks and snacks could be served to help make the students relaxed, while they would be improving their speaking skills in normal conversation. Here, they would not need to be embarrassed about being corrected, as it would be expected.
