Ways Electricity Is Used in a Food Manufacturing Plant

Since the discovery of electricity, people have used it as power to drive machines, for communication, for lighting and heating. Through studies and inventions, electric energy can now easily be converted into various forms such as mechanical, light, sound or heat, depending on its application, especially in industries to make work easier. Since energy cannot be created, electricity can be derived from more crude forms such fossil fuel or hydraulic force.
  1. Preservation

    • The most important issue the food industry deals with is preservation of products. Most foods are perishable and are only worth their freshness. Most industries use electricity to power refrigeration systems to preserve the delicate food they produce. Industrial refrigerators are effective and come with great storage capacity.

    Transport

    • Transport is as necessary within the factory itself as it is from the industry to the markets and other destinations. Within the factory, transport is mostly done via conveyor belts for bulky products from one point to another. These conveyor belts run on electricity, which is economical and also a clean source of energy. In some factories, the entire food processing is done while the product is still on the conveyor belt.

    Processing

    • In food processing plants, almost all the machines involved are electronic. Food mixers, grinders such as mills, minced meat machines, ovens, pasteurizers, boilers and packing machines all run on electricity. Electricity is more efficient than any other source of energy for driving these machines. Also, electrically-driven machines are easier to control and handle as compared to other types.

    Ventilation

    • Working in industries sometimes gets congested and stuffy and, as the machines run, they contribute to this as well as increasing the temperature within the factory. Some machines produce smoke that is harmful to people. To avoid all these problems, industrial cooling systems and air conditioners are installed in factories that run on electricity to expel smoke and bring in fresh and cool air into the working environment.
