The time allowance for the Praxis test is one of the most important differences between the computer-based Praxis and the paper-based Praxis. If you take the computer-based test in one session, you will get four and a half hours total. If you take the paper-based exam, however, the entire session will only take three hours. Despite the fact that you get more time for the computer-based exam, the actual times are very comparable. You get more time on the computer-based test to allow for tutorials to the computer programs.
Another difference between the two exams is the fact that you must answer more questions when you take the computer-based exam. There are six extra questions on the computer-based Reading section, six more questions on the computer-based Math section, and six more questions on the computer-based Writing section. The fact that there are slightly more questions helps account for extra time allowed on the computer-based test. Keep in mind that the length of each essay is the same for both tests.
The computer-based Praxis exam and the paper-based Praxis exam cover the same material and test the same academic skills. However, there are slightly different skills required when taking a test on a computer. Although you are allowed slightly more time to complete the test, you need to have some basic computer skills to be able to take the exam efficiently. You should have good excellent typing skills and understand how to work the basic functions of a computer. If you are not skilled on the computer, consider taking the exam on paper.
According to ETS, the company responsible for the Praxis exams, when you take the computer-based Praxis you will receive your scores faster than when you take the paper-based exam. After the computer-based Praxis exam, you will automatically be able to view you scores on the Reading and Math sections once the test has been completed. You will have to wait two or three weeks for official scores to be sent to you. The paper-based exam requires four weeks for official scores to be sent to you and you are not able to see your scores immediately after the test.
