Sign language is a form of communication that uses hand motions, shapes and positions, facial expressions and body movements to send messages from person to person. It is not much different than spoken languages in that sign language varies from country to country. American Sign Language is used in the United States and Europe, but sign language used in other parts of the world have slight variances. Contrary to popular belief, the deaf and hard of hearing are not the only ones who communicate with sign language. Friends and family members of the deaf, teachers and even employers often use sign language as a communication tool.
