Things We Can Do Every Day to Stop Deforestation

Deforestation -- the cutting down of trees or removal of forest cover -- has far-reaching consequences. From the destruction of natural habitat for millions of species of animals and plants to global warming and climate change, deforestation needs attention on a massive scale if we want to protect and preserve our planet. You can do things in your daily life that will also help curb the growing pace of deforestation.
  1. Recycle Paper

    • Each year, mills worldwide produce 300 tons of paper. We can decrease this amount and make a difference by recycling paper or considering alternative methods. Communicating electronically on a personal and business level can ensure that we have done our part in saving trees.

    Check the Label

    • Some products that we buy and consume every day come from rainforest produce. Latex, cork, fruit, nuts, timber, fibers, spices, medicines and natural oils and resins all need the sustainability of tropical rainforests to remain in production. Look for The Forest Stewardship Council certification on the label and make a smart choice.

    Plant a Tree

    • Planting a tree is a direct response to someone somewhere cutting a tree. You can plant trees in your backyard, garden, roadsides or nearby parks and ask others to do the same.

    Spread Awareness

    • Forming small active organizations to spread the word will create awareness. Getting your neighborhood, school, college or church involved and working on a communal scale will educate people who may want to help but may not know how. Attaching your organization or group to a professional one that has a more prominent presence may be the footing you need to make a difference.
