Hands-On Vocabulary Acquisition Activities

Vocabulary provides the foundation for learning a language. Good vocabulary increases reading comprehension and a student's ability to participate in class. Spoken and written communication skills can improve if students increase their vocabulary. Students with a good vocabulary are more articulate and confident in their ability to communicate effectively. You can use a number of vocabulary acquisition activities that will accelerate vocabulary comprehension and acquisition.
  1. Reading Out Loud

    • Students learn vocabulary quickly when they understand the context within which words are used. Provide vocabulary lists to students each week. Ask students to learn the words in the vocabulary list along with the definitions. Have them read out loud from texts that contain the vocabulary words. Initiate a discussion of the text and have students use the vocabulary words within the context of the discussion.

    Online Quizzes

    • Develop a series of quizzes that increase in difficulty. Ask students to memorize vocabulary lists and have them take a quiz. Set it up so they can advance to the next level only if they pass the quiz at the prior level. This sets up a motivational method for teaching vocabulary. Students can take the quizzes at home and keep working on their vocabulary till they can move on to the next level.

    Technology-Assisted Vocabulary Acquisition

    • Online vocabulary games, software vocabulary instruction and speech reading programs can all be used to improve the student's vocabulary. Set up a lesson-based strategy using different software programs. Ask the student to complete a lesson that includes one online activity before progressing to the next lesson. Provide the student with online "help" resources that he can access during the lesson. Use software programs that require the student to listen to a computer-generated voice that explains the vocabulary word. Have him record himself articulating the vocabulary words. Use a process of repetition with the help of the vocabulary software to ensure that the student learns the vocabulary.

    Stage Peformances

    • Students learn well in interactive environments. Ask the students to write a play using a vocabulary list. Assign each student to a section or scene of the play. Have the students act out the play. Engage the students in a discussion about the different characters and the context of the play. Make sure that they fully understand the meaning of each vocabulary word within its written context.
