Snakes in Northeast Mississippi

Although snakes have a bad reputation for being venomous and dangerous animals, the majority of the 2,900 species found worldwide are harmless to humans. About 140 species of snakes live in North America, but only 40 species are found in Mississippi. Common genera found in the northeastern area of the state include Nerodia, Thamnophis, Lampropeltis, Cemophora, Virginia, Farancia, Storeia, Elaphe, Heterodon, Pituophis, Rhadinaea, Agkistrodon, Crotalus, Sistrurus and Micrurus.
  1. Nerodia, Thamnophis, Cemophora and Lampropeltis

    • Also known as water snakes, five species from the genus Nerodia live in northeast Mississippi: the Mississippi green water snake (N. cyclopion), the brown water snake (N.taxispilota), the plainbelly water snake (N. erythrogaster), the northern water snake (N. sipedon) and the southern water snake (N. fasciata). Two members of the genus Thamnophis are found in the area: the Eastern ribbon snake (T.sauritus) and the common garter snake (T. sirtalis). Four species of the genus Lampropeltis are in northeast Mississippi, including the common kingsnake, the prairie kingsnake and the milk snake, which is similar to the venomous coral snake. The scarlet snake (Cemophora coccinea) is another coral-like nonvenomous species, and the only species in this genus.

    Virginia, Farancia and Storeia

    • Two species of small earth snakes live in northeast Mississippi: the rough earth snake (V. striatula) and the smooth earth snake (V. valeriae). The mud snake (Farancia abacura) and the colorful rainbow snake (Farancia erytrogramma) are very secretive, but also seen in Mississippi. Storeia snakes include the brown snake (S.dekayi) and the redbelly snake (S. occipitomaculata). These are all nonvenomous species.

    Elaphe, Heterodon, Pituophis and Rhadinaea

    • The corn snake (Elaphe guttata) and the rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta) are nonvenomous constrictors living in northeast Mississippi. The genus Heterodon, also known as hog-nosed snakes, have three species, two of them found in northeast Mississippi: Heterodon platyrhinos and Heterodon simus. The pine woods snake (Rhadinaea flavilata) has a reddish to brown color, and is sometimes found in Mississippi. The black pine snake (Pituophis melonoleucus lodingi) can grow up to 8 feet long and also lives in the area.

    Agkistrodon, Crotalus, Sistrurus and Micrurus

    • Agkistrodon, Crotalus, Sistrurus and Micrurus are the only venomous snakes found across Mississippi. Agkistrodon include the eastern and the western cottonmouths, as well as the southern copperhead. Ratllesnakes are members of the genera Crotalus and Sistrurus, including the timber rattlesnake (C. horridus), the eastern diamondback rattlesnake (C. adamanteus), the dusky pygmy rattlesnake (S.miliarius barbouri), the Carolina pygmy rattlesnake (S. miliarius miliarius) and the western pygmy rattlesnake (S.miliarius streckeri). The eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius fulvius) is also found in northeast Mississippi.
