Local community colleges may have German language classes available. These are often offered in a sequence, so you can build upon your skills each semester. Another option is to take an online class to learn German. LiveMocha is a free language learning program that is available online at livemocha.com. Rosetta Stone is another excellent program for learning German, but it costs several hundred dollars. Some libraries offer Rosetta Stone, so if you are considering this program, ask your librarian for more information before you buy it.
Listen to native German speech all that you can. Find German CDs and DVDs to listen to or watch even before you are fluent enough to understand them. This will help you to more quickly learn how to speak with a proper German accent. The Pimsleur German series is a great way to hear and repeat phrases and sentences in German with proper accents and noun/verb agreement. A link to information about the Pimsleur series appears in the Resources section below. Since it is expensive, check to see if your library has a copy first. Also, programs are available for download onto your MP3 player. This is a great way to learn the German language on the go. See the Resources section below for some links to downloadable lessons. Another option is to borrow, rent or buy movies with a German language option. Some movies are available in German with English subtitles, or in English with German subtitles.
When learning German, it's important to practice speaking, reading and writing the language every day. In the LiveMocha program, you can choose to have native German speakers evaluate your pronunciation and writing skills. If you do not have an assignment due, or if you are not ready to move onto the next lesson in your German language program, study your previous lessons. Write out vocabulary words, practice your pronunciation, and read or listen to material that is a bit further ahead than your current skill level.
If possible, visit Germany or another German-speaking country. Being immersed in German is an excellent way to quickly build your skill level. If it is not possible for you to visit Germany, visit a small German store or restaurant in your area. Ask the owners to speak German with you. Most people are happy to help others who are trying to learn their native tongue.
