What Is the Fastest Way to Learn Farsi?

Farsi, also known as Persian, is spoken by around 70 million people in Iran today. It is also an official language in Afghanistan and Tajikistan. According to Dr. Yavar Dehghani, the author of “Farsi (Persian),” Farsi is understood in parts of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
  1. Memorize Essential Words

    • A good way to get started is to get the comprehensive "Farsi" phrasebook by Dr. Dehghani. He says memorize a few key words and phrases first-- uch as "hello", "thank you" and "how much?". Use flashcards. Try putting some words in context --leave the "How much is it?" note in your wallet. Write words and phrases down on post-it notes or cards and stick them up around the place--on the fridge, in the bathroom, on the wall. Familiarize yourself with the Farsi letters.

    Stick to Your Method

    • There are many ways to learn a language. Some prefer writing everything down and memorizing, while others prefer using visual tools. Many free lessons are available online, such as Virtual Persian.

Go to Iran or Farsi Speaking Countries

    • Immerse yourself totally in Farsi. This is the fastest and easiest way to learn it. Start speaking with a few words rather than memorizing endless grammatical details. When you get a reply and a smile, it will boost your confidence. Once you start, Dr. Dehghani says, you will be amazed how many prompts you will get to help you build on those first words by picking up sounds from TV and seeing something on a billboard. Andrew Burke, the author of “Iran” says traveling in Iran without at least a basic grasp of Farsi will prove difficult, as English speakers are few and far between. This is a great opportunity for you to practice the language.

    Practice, Practice, Practice

    • When you learn a word, write it down in Farsi and say it aloud. Learn Iranian songs, read kids’ books or play games to increase your vocabulary. Order different food every time you eat. Talk to everybody whatever you do. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Persians will love and appreciate it if you try to speak their language to them.

    Enjoy the Process of Learning

    • According to Dr. Dehghani, learning some Persian will give you a chance to learn more about the culture and the history of 3,000 years of Persian civilization. Keep brushing up on your Farsi regularly once you are back home. Make Iranian friends, eat Persian food, attend Iranian events and join an Iranian group or organization.
