Laminate vs. Granite

Two popular materials that are used to create countertops are laminate and granite. Granite countertops are more durable than laminate but they come with a hefty price tag. Each material offers certain advantages and disadvantages.
  1. Benefits

    • Laminate countertops are relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. Granite is often chosen by consumers because of its resistance to heat, freezing, corrosion and scratching. Granite also is one of the hardest and most durable materials used in the fabrication of countertops.

    Maintenance

    • Granite countertops can last for several decades if they are properly cared for. They require an application of sealant every 1 to 3 years. They can be washed with simple household cleaners. Abrasive solutions or powders should not be used on laminate countertops because they are prone to scratching. Mild soaps or cleaners should be employed to clean laminate.

    Cost

    • Granite countertops are some of the most expensive on the market, they can cost anywhere between $50 to $90 per square foot installed. Laminate countertops are much cheaper with a price tag that can be anywhere between $36 to $45 per square foot installed.

    Installation

    • Because of its weight, granite should be installed only by licensed, experienced contractors. Laminate countertops on the other hand can be installed easily by do-it-yourselfers. Laminate sheets can be purchased for as little as $3 to $5 per square foot.

    Production

    • Producing granite countertops is a difficult process that involves the use of heavy equipment and a lot of manpower. Huge granite blocks are cut into slabs of varying thicknesses that are later cut and formed to customer specifications. Laminate is produced by fusing layers of decorative paper with moisture-resistant paper. The finished product is treated with resins.
