The Best Ways to Learn Dutch

Spoken primarily in the Netherlands, Dutch isn't a language you hear often in other countries. While schools usually offer Spanish and French, and sometimes Japanese or German, it's rare to find a school that teaches Dutch. If you're a high school graduate, you'll be hard-pressed to locate a college offering Dutch language courses. Luckily there are other ways to expose yourself to the language and begin speaking Dutch like a native.
  1. Podcasts

    • Use podcasts such as Laura Speaks Dutch. This podcast teaches irregular verbs, nouns, adjectives, colors and numbers. Laura Speaks Dutch also covers useful tips and information on the Netherlands. Download each podcast onto your computer and listen at your leisure. Repeat lessons that seemed difficult the first time. Podcasts let you hear the Dutch language as it's spoken by native speakers.

    Computer Programs

    • Try computer software, such as Rosetta Stone. Computer programs are like a classroom, but in the comfort of your own home. The lessons start with basics, such as colors, numbers and simple words; they work up to more complicated ideas, including making sentences and asking questions in Dutch. Each lesson is separate so you can follow them in order or skip to different lessons that cover what you need, such as learning phrases relating to travel or business in the Netherlands.

    Online Learning

    • Online websites are available to help you learn Dutch at home. Dutch Grammar is a website that offers an entire course covering Dutch grammar. Most sites include native speaker audio files, basic lessons and online quizzes that test your knowledge as you learn. You can jump ahead to lessons that interest you or follow the lessons in a predetermined course.

    Immersion

    • One of the best ways to learn Dutch is to immerse yourself completely in the language through a trip to the Netherlands. Upon your arrival, ask the hotel staff about taking lessons on speaking and reading Dutch. Begin using simple phrases while you shop and order food in restaurants. Interact with others and before long, you'll notice that the words come easier and that you're sounding more like a native speaker.
