Secondary Natural Disasters Caused by Typhoon Neoguri

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the Indian Ocean, or the western regions of the Pacific Ocean. Some, like 2008's Typhoon Neoguri, have caused wide spread devastation and launched secondary problems.
  1. Neoguri's Beginnings

    • Typhoon Neoguri began developing as a tropical storm on April 15, 2008, in the South China Sea. The storm reached typhoon strength on April 16, and peaked in intensity two days later.

    Flash Floods

    • Typhoon Neoguri brought heavy rains and winds up to 110 mph when it made landfall on Hainan Island. More than 120,000 people had to be evacuated and more were displaced when floods followed the typhoon. The flash floods in low-lying areas were blamed for three deaths.

    Mudslides

    • After leaving Hainan Island, Neoguri struck land again in the Guangdong province. Though it was now classified as a tropical storm, it still caused torrential rains that led to mudslides. The mudslides destroyed property and killed two individuals.
