Crane Boom Safety

A crane's boom is the long component that reaches out from the crane. Some cranes employ booms that are manufactured to a specific length, while other cranes employ booms that are retractable and can telescope out or retract to desired length. The U.S. Occupational Safety & Heath Administration outlines crane boom safety measures.
  1. OSHA

    • OSHA regulates acceptable crane design, boom design, crane/boom safety as well as crane/boom inspection. Qualified crane operators and inspectors have been trained and certified by OSHA.

    Electrocution

    • When a crane boom comes in direct contact with a length of power lines, the operator runs the risk of getting electrocuted unless the crane is equipped with an anti-current device. The device prevents a live current of electricity from traveling down a crane's boom to the operator.

    Safety Measures

    • A crane's boom needs to be inspected regularly to ensure that it remains free of corrosion, cracks and excessive wear. The hydraulics involved in telescoping booms also requires regular maintenance. Booms that have not undergone proper inspection and regular maintenance can fail and severely injure bystanders.
