How to Decrease Your Right Brain Activity

The "right brain" and "left brain" refer to the two hemispheres of your brain, which control different aspects of your thinking and processing functions. The right brain affects your intuition, pattern recognition, ability to recognize symbols, "big picture" thinking, holistic consideration, spatial interaction, art, and music. The left brain is connected with details, analytical thinking, naming, logic, language, and math. You can stimulate either hemisphere by performing activities in line with what that hemisphere controls. While you can't necessarily decrease right brain activity because the two hemispheres are so interconnected, you can perform activities that focus on the left brain and don't overuse the right.

Instructions

    • 1

Come up with a list of games that you enjoy that stimulate the left brain more than the right. Analytical puzzle games, language challenges (Scrabble, crossword puzzles), math games (Sudoku), and games that make you remember specific information all stimulate the left side of the brain. Incorporate these games into your day-to-day routine.

    • 2

Take a break from right brain stimulating activities, such as creative pursuits and long-term planning. If you regularly listen to music or look at art, give yourself some time off from those activities.

    • 3

Focus on small details, finding logical conclusions and analytical thinking. Try to train yourself to use left brain thinking. Consider problems from an logic-oriented standpoint, and gather extensive information before making any big decisions.

    • 4

Tune out your emotional, intuitive side in favor of analysis and logic. Lessen your dependence on emotional thinking.
