English Study Resources

Whether you're taking an English course or trying to study on your own, you won't successfully learn English unless you spend some one-on-one time with study resources, practicing concepts of difficulty and reviewing what you think you already know. Although one tried and true study resource is the English textbook, technology has provided English language learners with a number of other resources, including videos and websites. To make the most progress in your English study, choose the resource that you're most comfortable with and that best corresponds to your learning style.
  1. Computer Programs

    • From games that challenge English learners to use their English knowledge to achieve a high score to self-paced language programs like Rosetta Stone, there are a number of English study resources available in computer program format. Computer programs are optimal study resources because they allow you to test and develop all four English competencies--reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition, computer programs generally do not need the Internet to work, so you can use them while traveling or if you do not have a home Internet connection. More technologically inclined learners may feel more comfortable learning on a computer, and because computer programs often allow multiple settings, you can customize many programs to meet you at your current availability level. Top Ten Reviews names Tell Me More English, Rosetta Stone and Instant Immersion English as the three most effective software programs for English language learners.

    Educational Websites

    • For those who would prefer to use a free resource or who simply want to supplement their learning with an occasional piece of technology, educational websites offer a variety of excellent English study resources. While some sites primarily have text featuring grammar rules that you can study online as well as printable worksheets, other websites are interactive. For instance, Real English is a website that features English educational videos. Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab, on the other hand, offers everything from printable worksheets, to video, to quizzes.

    Video and Audio

    • Although you can still buy many English-language study resources on CD or DVD, technology has made it easier to instantly access audio and video study resources. Several free video and audio podcasts offer short lessons on learning English as a second language. You can also download instructional videos from iTunes or view them on YouTube. For those who prefer hard copies, ESL Tapes offers DVD series' for children and adult English language learners.

    Textbooks and Workbooks

    • Although they are not as interactive as technological study resources, textbooks and workbooks have a number of advantages as ESL study resources. First, they tend to have an organization that takes students from the easiest to the most difficult assignment, something that those using online resources might not find as readily available. Finally, textbooks and workbooks are easy on the eyes, easy to take with you when you travel and are usually filled with both lessons and practice pages in one easy-to-find location. For intermediate English language learners, Amazon recommends books on grammar, vocabulary and conversation.
