Do-It-Yourself Glazing

Glazing is the application of translucent color onto a surface. The color in excess is then rubbed off to create different effects. This process gives the wood furniture an antique or old-world look. Glazing is also a cheaper way to enhance the look of a piece of furniture without expensive professional customizing. With clear instructions, a do-it-yourselfer can be a successful glazer.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen the rag with a cleaning detergent and wipe the whole surface of the furniture. Tape the surrounding area for protection against excess glaze.

    • 2

Remove the luster from the paint using the low grit sandpaper. Follow the sanding by wiping off the dust particles using the tack cloth.

    • 3

Add a tint and glazing medium to the bucket and mix thoroughly. Continue adding the tint and glazing until you achieve a color shade that is to your liking.

    • 4

Apply the mixture to the furniture using the 2-inch paintbrush. Paint in only one direction vertically to get a uniform paint layer.

    • 5

Apply one layer of the glaze at a time to prevent the glaze from setting up too rapidly. Use the natural bristle brush to apply the glaze with one brushstroke. This will ensure the layer is uniform and without bumps.

    • 6

Perform a second pass on the glaze using steel wool. Apply constant pressure. If you make stops it can result in the appearance of small bumps of glaze. Swab the glaze using a rag to remove small bits of steel wool that may be stuck on the glaze.

    • 7

Run the artist's brush along the edges of the furniture to eliminate glaze accumulated at these areas. Remove the tape on the walls and wipe bleeding glaze using a dampened rag. Allow the furniture to dry completely before reinstalling any hardware that may have been removed.
