How to Measure Angles With Fingers

The types of angles that can be measured with fingers are angular distances. Angular distance is a measurement of two objects that are visible to a person. The angular distance between is the number of degrees apart that the objects appear to you. As you get closer to the objects, their relative size will appear to increase, and the angular distance will increase as well. Angular distance can be measured my holding the hand or fingers out directly in front of you, with arm outstretched.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold up your little finger. If the two objects are the same distance apart as the width of the tip of your little finger, they are approximately one degree apart.

Hold up your index finger. If the objects are the same distance apart as the width of your index finger, they are approximately 1.25 degrees apart.

    • 3

Hold up your three middle fingers. If the two objects are the same distance apart as the width of your three middle fingers, they are approximately four degrees apart.

    • 4

Hold up your fist. If the objects are the same distance apart as your full fist, they are approximately 10 degrees apart.

    • 5

Hold your hand out open with all the fingers outstretched. If the objects are as far apart as your open hand, they are approximately 18 degrees apart.
