Types of Commissioning

Commissioning is a term that encompasses the creation of a thing as well as the authority to create it. Commissioning can apply to the commissioning of a military officer, hiring an artist to create a work of art, development of a building, or employing a machine or ship into service.
  1. Military Officer

    • Military officers are given a commission upon completion of specific requirements. This commission, includes appointment of a rank and recognition of authority within the confines of the military branch of rank. Typically, U.S. military personnel must complete a bachelor's degree to be eligible for officer training. At different times, different branches of the military will offer a variety of pathways for individuals, including enlisted personnel, to gain commissions as officers in their branch of military service.

    Hire an Artist

    • When an artist is hired to create a work of art, the act is referred to as commissioning. The commissioned work is to be created by the artist within specific parameters set by the patron, or the person or group who does the hiring. A photographer, for example, will use her specific eye to take photographs, but the subject matter, such as a family wedding, is the determined by the commissioner of the work. Companies and individuals often commission works from artists to contribute to the look of their home, garden or entryway as a focal point.

    Working Order

    • A new machine may be commissioned once it has been brought to working order. If a car or product has just come off the factory line, it may need a few adjustments before it begins to run. Once it is running, it has been commissioned. The same may be said in reference to a warship. Once a warship has been readied for use, it is commissioned.

    Reference to Buildings

    • Commissioning of buildings has several uses. First, buildings must be commissioned for their initial creation. The design is commissioned from the architect in the way art is commissioned from an artist. However, buildings may also be re-commissioned and retro-commissioned. This type of commissioning refers to improving the working order of a building so that it is brought back up to the specifications of its original purpose. Such action may require tuneups, adjustments and refitting. Buildings may also undergo continuous commissioning. Continuous commissioning is a process of continuous adjustments, retrofitting and tune-ups designed to maintain optimal performance of large-scale facilities.
